Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic therapy that supports the movement of lymph and fluid through the body. This slow, light-touch technique helps reduce swelling, ease heaviness, and encourage the lymphatic system's natural processes. It is deeply calming and supportive for both physical concerns and nervous system regulation.

The MLD offered at Fireweed Wellness is Vodder-style Manual Lymphatic Drainage, the original clinical method developed by Dr. Emil Vodder in the 1930s and still considered the gold standard in lymphatic therapy. Vodder MLD uses precise hand movements, specific anatomical sequences, and very light, consistent pressure to stimulate lymphatic flow without overwhelming the tissues. It is a medically grounded, evidence-informed technique that works directly with the physiology of the lymphatic system. Recertification is completed every two years to ensure practice remains current with the latest advances in lymphatic therapy.

This is not Brazilian lymphatic drainage. Brazilian lymphatic drainage is a separate and distinct technique. It is typically faster paced, uses deeper pressure, and is focused on immediate visible contouring and sculpting effects. It is a cosmetic procedure, not a clinical one. While it has its place, it works differently, serves different goals, and is not what is being offered here.

Vodder MLD is not about contouring. It is about clinical outcomes: reducing swelling, supporting post-surgical recovery, improving fluid balance, calming the immune system, and working safely with the body's physiology over time. The pressure is intentionally light because the lymphatic vessels sit just beneath the skin and respond best to subtle, precise stimulation. Deeper pressure does not improve results. It can actually impede them.

If you are looking for a sculpting or shaping treatment, this is not the right fit. If you are looking for genuine lymphatic support, you are in the right place.

MLD can help with post-surgical swelling and recovery, pre-surgical preparation, chronic puffiness or fluid retention, inflammatory conditions, sinus congestion, immune support, fatigue, and nervous system regulation. Supporting the lymphatic system before surgery may also help tissues be more resilient, reduce post-operative swelling, and support a smoother recovery.

Because Vodder MLD is performed without oils or lotions, it does not pair easily with traditional massage in the same session. Oil-based massage and no-oil lymphatic techniques require different pacing, contact, and tissue preparation, and combining them can reduce the effectiveness of both. MLD is typically offered as its own focused treatment.

All MLD treatments are billed under the RMT license and are eligible for reimbursement under extended health plans that cover massage therapy.

Sessions are tailored to each person's needs with an emphasis on comfort, gentle flow, and supporting the body's natural healing processes. Many clients leave feeling lighter, clearer, and more at ease in their bodies.
